Nonetheless, AI continues to struggle with complex cognitive tasks like advanced mathematical problems and nuanced visual commonsense reasoning, highlighting ongoing challenges in achieving broad AI competence.

2. Research Domains:

The landscape of frontier AI research is overwhelmingly led by industry. In 2023, companies developed 51 notable AI models, while academic institutions contributed only 15. Collaborative projects between these entities also reached an all-time high with 21 significant innovations, highlighting a trend toward synergistic progress.

The financial burden of developing state-of-the-art AI models is reaching new heights. For instance, the training expenses for OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini Ultra were around $78 million and $191 million respectively, reflecting the substantial resources required for cutting-edge AI research.
